Lake Zurich Fall 2022 Announcments

The Village of Lake Zurich website published that leaf collection will start on the week of 10/16/2022 and end on 12/10/2022. Leaves need to be raked within 5 ft of the curb and must not be placed in the gutter or on the street. For the residents that may not be aware, leaves need to be raked to the curb by Tuesday or Wednesday morning for leaf collection on your trash and recycling day. This is a program provided to the Village and it does not cost anything to join. To check on what day the leaf collection will be on your street, or when the trash and recycling will be, we recommend contacting the Village for more information.

The Village of Lake Zurich’s weekly collection of curbside compost will start on April 1 through the second week of December. Food and yard waste can be combined in the same containers. If you receive garbage and recycling service from Prairieland/LRS, curbside composting is included. This compost will go to local lake county farmers for homegrown compost material. This can help the environment and community. It is recommended to have the cart on the curb by 7 am on the normal collection day. Even if it is not completely full.

Did you know that Food Waste is the biggest category of household waste in Illinois? About 4 times more food is sent to landfills than yard waste.

In Lake Zurich, you can now place in the Food & Yard Waste bin: Yard Waste, House Plants, All Food, Food Soiled Paper. Do NOT place Plastic, glass, metal, rubber bands, twist ties, ail or other liquids, rocks lumber, or cement. Plastic, chemicals, rubber bands, and contaminants need to be kept out since the compost will be used to grow food.

Food scraps can be put directly in a container, a paper bag, or a BPI-certified compostable liner. Do NOT use regular plastic bags. Some tips for keeping your compost cart clean is to place a newspaper or box at the bottom of the cart. Leaf bags or cardboard would also work. Rinse the cart on a regular base using a hose. Using dish detergent can help. Try layering yard the food scrapes between the yard waste.

You can also mix the yard waste and food in bio-degradable paper bags that are labeled for landscape or yard waste. Do not use plastic bags, because they will NOT be collected. Bags need to be on the curb by 7 am on your normal collection day.

Branches should be tied in a bundle using biodegradable string or twine. Do NOT use metal twine. The bundle should not be over 50 lbs and NOT over 4 ft in length. Concrete, dirt, rocks, whole entire trees, tree limbs or stumps, and SOD are not a part of the yard waste program.

For questions or more information, we recommend visiting the Village or Lake Zurich’s website or contacting them.
